Problems related to muscle memory in the context of preparation of a musical work

Abstract

The article discusses issues related to preparation of a musical work and – based on, inter alia, interviews with performers, author’s reflections and selected literature – shows problems arising during practice on the instrument. As a result of the conducted research and various observations, attention was focused on the difficulties which occurred most frequently. Achieved results prompted the author to become more interested in the question of muscle memory (also called the body memory), its role and the function it plays in the process of preparing a musical piece. Due to the lack of an unambiguous definition of muscle memory in terms of music so far, there were made attempts to characterize it, to describe the manners of developing, improving and employing muscle memory in the following stages of work on a musical piece. The text also provides the characteristics of different types of human memory, along with a related discussion on them and their properties.<br/><br/>
