PRODUCTION LOGISTIC OPTIMIZATION WITH WCM METHODOLOGY AT A LEADING ICE CREAM MANUFACTURER

Abstract
In the current system of a leading ice cream manufacturer, the production lines are fed by transpallets and this causes overstocks at the production stations with non-value added activities. The aim of the project is to develop an extensive Milk Run distribution system for an idle three-wagon train. This system for the train decides on the when, how much and in which route to feed the production stations so that right amount of good is delivered on time. Another objective of study is to design new systems for stocking raw materials at the productions sites. A mathematical model that takes the daily production schedule as input and determines the optimal transportation plan is developed. Heuristic methods are developed to solve the mathematical model since the optimal solution can not be obtained within reasonable time limits. For this, an initial solution is obtained with a constructive heuristic, and then simulated annealing heuristic is used to improve the solution. ZNEC Decision Support System with a user-friendly interface is developed for the operation of internal logistic activities. Some sketched designs for Golden Zone improvements are put into practice by the Company. Material stocks at the stations are decreased by 78% with Milk Run system and the use of transpallets is eliminated.
