Professor Józef Kubicz (1906-1988) - Wrocław Dermatologist, Research Worker and Teacher. In Memoriam on the 100th Anniversary of His Birth

Abstract

Professor Józef Kubicz (1906-1988) was the representative of generation beginning the university studies in pre-war times, and finishing it in period of occupations. He had to leave Lvov (Lwów), where he worked with supervision of prominent Polish scientists such as famous Professor Weigl, a head of the Institute of Typhus Fever. In post-war Wroclaw, from the beginning, he started to work at the Department of Dermatology in which he occupied positions: senior assistant, adjunct, assistant professor and professor. In years 1961-1977 he was a head of the department, till he re-tired. Professor Kubicz engaged very much of his attention and interest in research work, he investigated infectious aetiology of many diseases, for example he suggested a virus cause for Kaposi sarcoma, what was confirmed in 1990's. Professor Kubicz was the co-author of idea of vegetable oils uses in dermatological care. He got patent in 1958 year and preparation Linomag®, based on this patent, is still universally applied in dermatology and cosmetology. From early 1960's he has described many cases of rare dermatological syndromes and diseases which enriched the dermatological casuistryin Poland. Professor Michałowski, authoroftextbook- the Dermatological Syndromes, qualified: Hypotrichosis dystrophica et lanuginosa in an infant in a case ofectodermal dysplasia as Kubicz syndrome I, and Haemangiomatosis centrofacialis et teleangiectasiae symmetricae corporis congenitae as Kubicz syndrome II. Professor Kubicz educated numerous dermatologists, which has enrolled him into the tradition of Wrocław School of Dermatology.
