Outline of history of academic dermatology in Szczecin. Chair of Dermatology and Venereology in 1948-2001

Abstract

The creation of Medical Academy took place in 1948. Except creation of several theoretical and clinical departments also Department of Dermatology and Venereology was created. The first head of this Department was Prof. Tadeusz Chorążak, born in Lvov. He was the author and coauthor of five first scientific papers and the supervisor of two doctoral thesis. After two years prof. T. Chorążak left Szczecin and went out to Silesia. His successor was Assoc. Prof. and subsequently Full Prof. Jerzy Lutowiecki. He consolidated staff and built up scientific labs. He was also a supervisor of one doctoral thesis. After three years Prof. Lutowiecki left Szczecin to become head of Department of Dermatology and Venereology in Łódź. In 1953 Assoc. Prof. and subsequently Full Prof. Henryk Prochacki took over a post of head of Department in Szczecin for almost a quarter of a cen-tury. He developed a few scientific laboratories giving priority to mycological one. Prof. H. Prochacki died in 1975. In 1977-2001 Assoc. Prof. and later Full Prof. Adam Nowak comingfrom Wroclaw took over a post of head of Department. In these years all the laboratories of the Department including histopathological, mycological, alergological one as well as radiotherapy and physiotherapy rooms were modernized. Moreover, operating suite for dermatological surgery and photographic lab were found. Quite new entity was continually developed dermatopharmacological lab. More than 300 scientific papers were published in Polish and foreign journals, many dermatologists as well as medical students were educated in the Department. Moreover, members of the staff took a part and presented results of their studies during many scientific congresses in Poland and abroad. Department of Dermatology organized many scientific international and national congresses and symposiums. In 2001 dr hab., later prof. Romuald Maleszka took over the post of head of Department.
