Progress of application of the twin method in diabetes factorial studies
Journal Title: Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine - Year 2023, Vol 35, Issue 1
Abstract
Diabetes is a complex disease caused by the combined effects of genetic and environmental factorsï¼ which seriously affects peopleâs health level and living quality. As a special research toolï¼ the twin method can be used to estimate the relative effects of genes and environment on diabetes-related traits. Moreoverï¼ compared with regular study subjectsï¼ twins have natural controls. The extended methods combined with genetic statistics and molecular biology techniques also help to analyze risk factors of diabetes and clarify the true relationship between exposure and outcome. This paper reviewed the progress of the application of the twin method to diabetes factorial studies in the past ten years at home and abroadï¼ and summarized the advantages and limitations of the classical twin modelï¼ co-twin control studiesï¼ and genome-wide and epigenetic epidemiological studies.
