Project work of primary school pupils as a means of teaching to solve story problems

Abstract

The article deals with the issue of teaching primary school pupils to solve complex story problems by means of organizing the project work of pupils at the mathematics lessons. It is noted that the issue of teaching pupils to solve story problems becomes especially topical in the context of introducing a competency approach into primary school education. The pupils’ general ability to solve complex story problems is the main indicator of the well-developed mathematical competence in general. It is substantiated that since competence is the quality of the individual, which manifests itself in knowledge, skills and values, an expedient method of developing mathematical competence of pupils is the organization of their project work. Stages of the mathematical content project implementation according to its types are illustrated on the example of the organization of third graders work over the project «My contribution to the mathematical history of the class» for creating a collection of story problems. During the organization of project work, the cognitive needs of third-graders were taken into account, which stimulated their search activity; pupils were taught to analyze, compare, highlight, and apply the acquired skills. It is stated that the organization of the pupils’ project work provides: research character of learning, which stimulates the cognitive activity of pupils, motivates pupils to study, changes the attitude to educational tasks, providing them with subjectively important content. The collective character of teaching, acting according to the formula «studing by teaching,» contributes to the more effective development of the necessary skills of pupils. Collective compilation of the original problems collection by pupils provided an increase in their interest in studying mathematics and the level of their ability to solve complex problems, as well as gaining experience in project work and understanding the importance of a common goal by pupils. The records can be used by educators in teaching pupils to solve story problems and organizing the project work with pupils at the lessons of mathematics
