Abstract
In this work we review basic aspects of electromagnetic propagation in continuous matter, including media described by bi-isotropic and bi-anisotropic constitutive relations. We investigate the effects of magnetic conductivity on electromagnetic propagation in dispersive matter, addressing some optical effects and energy propagation properties. Considering a medium endowed with a magnetic current, described by a linear constitutive relation in analogy with Ohm’s law and the Chiral Magnetic Eect (CME). The latter occurs in systems with chiral fermions and involves an electric current generated by a magnetic eld by means of an exotic magnetic conductivity. For a diagonal magnetic conductivity, which includes the CME, the refractive index is modified, implying birefringence. In this scenario, the corresponding propagating modes are described by LCP and RCP waves and the birefringence effect is evaluated through optical rotatory power. Regarding the energy propagation properties, we determined the energy velocity for each propagating mode and also found that group velocity and energy velocity are not equivalent due to the presence of non-null magnetic conductivity. Our results provide new insight into typical material properties associated with magnetic conductivity.
