PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF PIMPINELLA TIRUPATIENSIS BAL. AND SUBR. AN ENDANGERED MEDICINAL PLANT OF TIRUMALA HILLS AGAINST STREPTOZOTOCIN GENERATED OXIDATIVE STRESS INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Pharmacy (IRJP) - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 7

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of P. tirupatiensis, extract on antioxidant defense system of liver and pancreas against the streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Ethyl acetate extract of P. tirupatiensis was administered orally for a period of 30 days (750 mg/kg BW) to diabetic rats. Fasting blood glucose level and malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly augmented, whereas body weight, antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx)) and non-enzymic antioxidants (reduced glutathione, (GSH), vitamin C and vitamin E) were reduced significantly in (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. However administration of P. tirupatiensis extract for a period of 30 days showed beneficial effects in all the biochemical parameters in (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The present study indicates that extract of P. tirupatiensis modulates antioxidant activity and augments the defense against ROS generated damage in diabetic rats.
