PROTEIN REQUIREMENT – DO ATHLETES NEED MORE?

Abstract

Pro per pro te in sup ply in diet is ne ces sa ry for the growth and de ve lop ment of the bo dy, re ge ne ra tion of da ma ged tis sue and re pla ce ment of its da ily loss. Ath le tes ne - ed pro te in for the growth of mu sc le mass and re ge ne ra tion of tis sue da ma ged du ring phy si cal ac ti vi ty. Cur ren tly, the RDA for pro te in in he al thy adult is 0.8 g/kg bo dy mass per day. Ath le tes ne ed mo re pro te in than it is re com men ded for adults. But most of nu tri tion re com men da tions in sport sug gest no mo re than 2.0 g pro te in/kg bo dy mass da ily. Pro te in re com men da tions for en du ran ce ath le tes ran ge from 1.2 to 1.4 g/kg of bo dy mass and for strength ath le tes they ran ge from 1.2 to 1.7 g/kg bo dy mass da - ily. In or der to ma in ta in ni tro gen ba lan ce, the amo unt of ani mal pro te in in diet sho uld be hi gher than plant pro te in. The da ily, high le vel of phy si cal ac ti vi ty re qu ires in cre - ased ener gy expen di tu re, and the re fo re in cre ase of fo od con sump tion, which sho uld al lows to ba lan ce the ener gy expen di tu re. Pa ral lel to hi gher con sump tion, the sup ply of pro te in in diet in cre ases. Sa tis fy ing ener gy ne eds for the or ga nism is the hi ghest prio ri ty, and too low ca lo rie va lue of the diet will le ad to uti li zing the sup plied pro te in as an ener ge tic sub stra te. Ath le tes on ba lan ced diet with pro ducts con ta ining com - ple te pro te in do not ne ed ad di tio nal pro te in sup ple men ta tion. Ath le tes not me eting the re com men da tions of die ta ry pro te in sup ply, may be ne fit from its sup ple men ta tion.
