Abstract
This source material contains a protocol from the 17th century which was published as part of an article by Dmitrij Iwanowicz Dowgiałło. It concerns the fate of the Starovyery or “Old Believer” immigrants to the Polish Rzeczpospolita. King Jan III Sobieski’s royal secretary, inquisitor and commissioner, Piotr Michał Połtiew, began an inquiry on their subject. It commenced in February 1690 in Vietka and was concluded by a protocol signed 18 February, a copy of which was entered in the Rzeczyca district court in Minsk Voivodeship (now Belarus). The document, at the time in the records register of the disctrict court in Rzeczyca (no. 4. cl. 51-52), was discovered by Dmitrij Iwanowicz Dowgiałło and published in 1900 in its original version, along with fragments of a rendition in Russian (or rather a commentary) in Sbornikie statiej Moglilewskich Gubiernskich Wiedomosti, in the article Mogilewskaja starina. K’ istorii Wietki (p. 37-41). Previously it was unknown in its entirety, although Old Believers and numerous researchers referenced it in their writings.
