PSALMS AS A PECULIAR TYPE OF PRAYER TEXTS

Abstract

The present paper deals with the investigation of syntactic compositional and rhythmic intonation peculiarities of Anglican Psalms which are considered to be a special musical recitative type of prayers belonging to religious discourse. There have been singled out those syntactic devices, namely, synonymic, antithetic, synthetic parallelism and chiasm which lead to the creation of a peculiar sense rhythm of English Psalms. A special status of Psalms among other prayer text realisations is explained not only by their artistic value or their importance in Christian life, but also by their belonging to hesychast practice of a “brain-heart” prayer which contributes to the human “opening” understood as a first stage of synergy of divine and human energies achievement. Implicit dialogue with Almighty, taking place in Psalms, is formulated as “simultaneity with Christ” which can be rendered as “openness to Christ”. The main aims of a religious discourse – strengthening in faith, Divine knowledge transmission and prayerful communication with God – are concentrated in these Biblical hymns.
