PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF IMAGE FORMATION OF UKRAINE’S SECURITY SECTOR EXPERTS IN STUDENTS’ ENVIRONMENT

Journal Title: Psychological journal - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue 7

Abstract

The article highlights the issue of psychology of security agencies’ institutionary image. On the basis of psycho diagnostic methods (“The portrait of values” by Sh. Shwarz, “The level of a personal trust or distrust in other individuals” by A. Kupreichenko and methods of an associative experiment created by M. Kozliakovsky) the author studied the level of formation of an image of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Armed Forces of Ukraine, National Police of Ukraine, National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine. The experiment was conducted within the students’ environment in six regions of Ukraine – Kyiv, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk (on the territories placed under control), Transcarpathia and Chernivtsi oblasts. The data collected in various areas demonstrate essential differences in students’ attitude toward security and defense sector of Ukraine institutions that is caused by various levels of experience gained by regional representatives in the field of interaction with the aforesaid agencies in 2014-2018. Thus, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine is steadily rated at the highest position as it is considered to be an instrument of assistance to the population under complicated circumstances. Simultaneously, the difference in the points received among other security sector institutions is minimal. On the basis of A. Kupreichenko questionnaire the author proved that there would exist differences in criteria of credibility and incredulity to three categories of an individual: non-familiar, close and familiar one. The level of credibility to a security agency representative was compared to the one that concerns above mentioned persons. There have been defined symmetrical criteria of credibility and incredulity to an unfamiliar person: tidiness-untidiness, impulsiveness, selfishness, reticence, different interests, religion. The author found out that the formation of trust in security sector specialists according to aforesaid criteria would promote the shift of their perception from the category of unfamiliar individuals to the category of familiar ones. According to Sh. Shwarz methods the author pointed out values that students consider as the most significant ones for security sector experts, that is universalism, safety and benevolence. The research proves that any security agency image should be based upon trust in the following objects: a) organization itself, b) organization’s systems of values, c) social parts played by the organization representatives. By means of an associative experiment the author restored the image and counter image of experts of Ukraine’s security and defense sector (their associative profiles). It was concluded that the activities that concern image formation within Ukraine’s security and defense sector institutions should be aimed at reaching the following goals: promotion of an image in informational space of Ukraine that has credibility; its attraction renewal. The image of Ukraine’s security and defense sector institutions has to become the one of dedication on the basis of credibility to the institution itself, the system of its values and social parts played by its representatives.
