Abstract

The author examines the views of representatives of Ukrainian conservatism ideology first third of the twentieth century in the context of public self-organization. The example of works P. Zalyesskyy (1867–1929), A. Nazaruk (1883–1940) and E. Chykalenko (1861–1929), the author gives the basic ideas of Ukrainian conservatives on civil society interaction with public authorities. P. Zalyesskyy substantiates the idea that public self-organization is charac-teristic of modernity. A. Nazaruk notes the importance of internal issues in functioning of NGOs (especially the issue of accumulation of internal resources of members of NGOs). E. Chykalenko proves the importance of the cooperative movement as an important element of civil society. Most members of the Ukrainian conservative movement support the idea of establishment of the monarchy in Ukraine (authoritarian political regime). At the same time, civil society should deter manifestations of negative traits of authoritarianism (excessive centralization and state control of social life). The author compares the attitudes P. Zalyesskyy. O. Nazaruk and E. Chykalenko with those of classic Ukrainian conservatism (V. Lypynski). The author emphasizes the importance of the following provisions Ukrainian Conserva-tive: first, public organizations must rely on internal resources, and secondly, civic education is an important factor in the development of civil society.
