PubMed search methodology

Abstract

PubMed is English-language, free, online database providing access to more than 22.5 million articles on life sciences and biomedical topics. Each year, the base is supplemented with more than 500,000 new positions. Such a large number of available publications, and free access, make PubMed one of the most popular search engines used throughout the world both for clinical management Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and science. The paper presents basic information about the methods of using PubMed. In nine points the authors present a number of issues related to the indexing system, Boolean operators which are necessary for creation of search equation and methodology of asking clinical questions. Reference management topic is also referred to. Finally, additional tools accelerating work with PubMed are short-listed and characterized. All points are accompanied by legible prints and examples. In the era of ubiquitous information, selection of reliable source material, on which doctors can base some of their decisions, becomes a serious problem. The knowledge of basic techniques of using PubMed can facilitate this challenging task.
