PULMONARY REHABILITATION IN CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE

Journal Title: MEDICINA INTERNA - Year 2011, Vol 0, Issue 6

Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a disease state characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. Management of stable COPD may include a combination of smoking cessation, the use of short and long acting bronchodilators, inhaled and oral corticosteroids, methylxanthines, pulmonary rehabilitation and long term oxygen therapy, depending on the severity of disease. In recent years, Pulmonary Rehabilitation has very much become an established treatment modality in COPD and should be considered in any patient who has moderate or severe symptoms. There is a strong evidence base for Pulmonary Rehabilitation in COPD with many studies showing significant improvements in outcomes post-rehabilitation such as increased exercise capacity, improved Health-related Quality of Life and reduction of dyspnoea. This paper reviews the evidence and summarises the main components of a rehabilitation programme and the pathophysiological rationale for their use.
