Působení nevládních organizací v OSN prizmatem mikroekonomie / Non-Governmental Organizations at the United Nations through the Lens of Microeconomics

Journal Title: Scientia et Societas - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

The article represents a transdisciplinary approach to the very topical issue of participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) at the United Nations (UN) system. The topic is gaining more and more ground in the international relations studies, namely due to its relevance to the issues of globalization, emergence of non-state actors and changing international system. But the practice of increasing engagement of NGOs at the UN does not keep economy untouched either. So far, however, not only have not international relations scholars addressed the issue sufficiently, but economists seem to outlook it completely. This is the very first article to analyze the issue of NGO participation at the UN through the prism of microeconomics. What is the substance of the UN from the microeconomics’ point of view? And how can this discipline explain the trend of involvement of NGOs within the UN structure? Addressing the UN as a special kind of firm which is increasingly integrating NGOs to save its transaction costs enables us to apply the behavioral theories of the firm to understand better the new kind of NGO-UN relationships. The article also represents an important step in further reinforcing the transdisciplinarity between international relations studies and microeconomics which can complement each other thereby contributing to enrichment of our knowledge also in other fields examined so far only either from the point of view of microeconomics, or the international relations.
