Quality of life among parents of children with autism

Abstract
Introduction: The important role in development of the autistic child is played by their closest family therefore contemporary therapeutic effects place emphasis on highest activity of parents in the treatment process. For efficiency therapy, satisfactory health condition, committed attitude and good mood of parents is essential. Purpose: This study aimed to present how strong is the hadipicapped child influence on parent’s function in family and social environment and prove that the therapeutic aid is needed not only for children but also for their parents. Meterial and methods: This study examined 70 parents of children with autism and 70 parents with children developing properly (comparative group). To analyze foregoing problem the SF- 36 Questionnaire was used. Results: Parents of autistic children has the poorer function than parents of children who develop without health problems in all analyzed areas of life (general health, physical functioning, mental health, social functioning, energy and vitality). Conclusions: Appearing the handicapped child in family is always stressful situation especially in case of autistic child. Systematic screening of parents’ mental and physical health is indispensable and may improve their well – being and quality of life.
