Quel héritage de l’argot de la prostitution dans les dictionnaires contemporains ?

Abstract
Prostitution was the main business of French Milieu, whose members were all male. In this environment, women were considered simply as commodities meant to enrich them: they received the tag of gagne-pain. In the first half of 19th century prostitutes worked mainly in bawdy houses, but the illegal prostitution on the streets continued and women worked under the protection of a pimp. At the beginning of 20th century, French prostitutes were exported all over the world: that is the so-called “Traite des Blanches”. Among the numerous slang words related to prostitution, many referred to the pimp – maquereau, bidochard, dos – and to the prostitute – marmite, bifteck, carabine, perle. Rhetorical figures – especially metaphor and metonymy – play a very important role in the creation of new lexical units. What is the heritage of this rich vocabulary in French contemporary dictionaries? In this article, we aim to verify if these lexical units are included in a selection of French contemporary dictionaries – Le Trésor de la Langue française informatisé, Le Petit Robert and Le Dictionnaire de l’Argot et du français populaire – and if they are accompanied by lexicographical marks.
