Quilting Technique to Prevent Seroma Formation following Mastectomy for Breast Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study
Journal Title: Journal of Fatima Jinnah Medical University Lahore - Year 2017, Vol 11, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: Seroma formation is the most frequently occurring complication in breast cancer patients undergoing mastectomy. Studies suggest that quilting technique is associated with considerable lower rate of seroma formation. However, such work in local setting has scarcely been reported in the indexed literature. This study aimed to determine the frequency of seroma formation in patients undergoing flaps closure by quilting technique after modified radical mastectomy with axillary clearance. Patients and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted at Department of Surgery, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore from June till December 2017. Total 271 adult women undergoing modified radical mastectomy with axillary clearance were enrolled. Interviewer administered questionnaire was used to collect the demographic and clinical information. Height, weight, body mass index of each patient; and size of the tumor were measured. Quilting technique was used for flaps closure. Seroma formation was the outcome variable. Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 22. Results: Mean age of the patients was 46.6 years (range, 34-65 years). The mean body mass index was 26.8 kg/m2 (range = 20.2 to 33.5 kg/m2) while, mean tumor size was 3.5 cm (range = 2.1 to 4.9 cm). The frequency of seroma formation was 21.4% in this study. However, no significant difference (p-value>0.05) was found in the rate of seroma formation among various age groups and for different body mass index and tumor size groups. Conclusion: The frequency of seroma formation following quilting technique was low. Moreover, formation of seroma had showed no association with the age, body mass index and size of tumor.
