Radical Scavenging Activity and Preliminary Phytochemical Screening of the Leaf Extracts of Terminalia Brownii Fresen

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 9

Abstract

Terminalia brownii Fresen (Combretaceae) is widely used for treatment of various diseases associated with free radicals. In this study the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhyorazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and phytochemical constituents of its leaf extracts were studied. The 80% methanol crude extract and fractions prepared from the dried leaves of T. brownii showed potent DPPH radical scavenging activity with IC50 values ranging from 1.7-33.1 μg/ml. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the most potent activity (IC50 = 1.7 μg/ml) better than the standard antioxidant, ascorbic acid (IC50 = 3.1 μg/ml). Preliminary phytochemical screening of the 80% methanol extract showed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, saponins, polyphenols and phytosterols. Alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and coumarins were not detected. The results of the present investigation revealed that T. brownii leaf posses promising radical scavenging phytochemicals that could at least partly justify its use in traditional medicine in the management of myriads of diseases associated with oxidative stress and its potential to be used as a source of antioxidants.
