RAIL PASSENGERS’ EXPECTATION AND THEIR WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR FASTER TRAVEL – EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM POLAND

Abstract

The article refers to the passengers’ perception of rail services parameters, what is discussed in the context of the time factor and its value in rail transport. Time factor has significant impact on passengers’ decisions regarding the modal choice and willingness to pay. Time has value, therefore time savings, resulting from faster travel, have monetary dimension. Depending on the subjective value of time, transport users declare to pay more for a shorter trip, what is revealed in the empirical survey done at selected train routes in Poland. The results show that significant proportion of passengers accept higher fares, subject to a shorter travel time.
