Ralets as an Obligatory Spending of Craftsmen in Hetmanshchyna in the 18th Century

Abstract
In the article, the tax-expense aspect of financial activity of the workshops (Poltava region at the beginning of XVIII age), is analysed. In particular, the questions of money and natural in behalf of cossack petty officer are considered, city officials. One of craft’s expenses was «ralets». Ralets in Hetmanshchyna is a present which were given twice a year on Christmas and on Easter to a socially senior person by people depended on him. Furthermore, ralets didn’t give guarantee for immediate profit and was obligatory, that made it closer to tax than bribe by the status. In most cases ralets was given in natural kind, which means manufactures. Charges were more or less the same, 10-16 coins per person. Charges from butchers were different, they were higher in several times then medium. Craftsmen took them to Cossaks heads – regiment or hundred administrations – and to city administration: prefects, clerks, burgomasters. The basic tendencies were: the transition to the money relations; the economic submission and use of workshops by a cossack petty officer. City crafts corporations ‘de jure’ obeyed to magistrates or town halls power, although because of Hetmanshchyna cities specific character, as they were fist of all military territorial actor, craftsmen also had to pay taxes to regiment are hundred administration.
