Recent trends for management of Parkinson’s Disease
Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Pharmacy and Biological Sciences (IOSR-JPBS) - Year 2017, Vol 12, Issue 5
Abstract
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive disorder of the brain. Parkinson’s disease occurs when certain neurons in substantia nigra die or become impaired. The diagnosis of PD remains essentially a clinical one and it is important to recognize the early features together with symptoms and signs suggesting other causes of parkinsonism. At present, therefore, there are no proven neuroprotective therapies with only symptomatic treatments available. If the patient and clinician feel treatment is required, what therapy should be commenced? This decision will be based on the age of the patient, the likelihood of proper compliance, the presence of cognitive impairment, additional medical conditions and the wishes of the patient. Treatment in the initial stage is to alleviate symptoms allowing the individual to be fully independent and to carry out their normal daily activities. It is vital that treatment is well tolerated. For this reason, monotherapy is usually desirable. A large number of agents like levodopa, dopamine agonist, COMT and MAOB inhibitor together with surgical interventions and stem cell therapy are now available to treat early and late complications of Parkinson’s disease.
