Abstract
The article outlines the history of “Romeo and Juliet” translations covering the main stages of its entering into Ukrainian literature. It focuses on print translations done by P. Kulish, A. Hosenpud, I. Steshenko, I. Kostetskyi and Yu. Andrukhovych. The tragedy was translated for the first time by P. Kulish and published in 1901 after I. Franko edited and supplied it with a preface and commentaries. In 1928 P. Kulish’s translation was published under M. Voronyi’s editorship whose aim was to update the language and style to the demands of the time. A new translation was done by A. Hosenpud in 1937. In two decades it was followed by I. Steshenko’s interpretation of the tragedy which later was also published in a complete six-volume edition of Shakespeare’s works, making it the translation through which a Ukrainian reader usually gets acquainted with the play. In 1957 another translation of the play done by I. Kostetskyi appeared in Munich. It is the result of the translator’s modernist literary and esthetic position which makes it more reader – than listener-oriented. In 1988 “Prapor” magazine published V. Mysyk’s interpretation which was done in 1932 but because of the translator’s arrest it could not come out earlier. It is highly evaluated by scholars and has a lot of benefits in comparison with other existing translations. The everlasting topicality of W. Shakespeare’s work and its inexhaustible interpretation is conclusively proved by the appearance of Yu. Andrukhovych’s translation done in 2016. Thus, “Romeo and Juliet” is a true example of multiplicity of translations done by the outstanding figures of Ukrainian translation and literature.
