Reclusion: Being Between the Society and Sacred Experience

Abstract

The problem of the article is to identify the social and historical reasons for seclusion and being a hermit between the society and sacred experience. This article discusses three main periods of sociality. They are the primitive, archaic after the Neolithic revolution and the Antiquity. To identify the mechanism of allocation of the individual from society, the author resorts to a comparative analysis of these periods of seclusion. As a result, the author concludes that the only thing that could forcibly separate the individual from generation to primitive – a violation of the taboo on murder and violation of the taboo on sexual intercourse with a blood relative. The archaic figure of the magician stands out – the man wielding the magic and able to model the universe for a single tribe. Shamanism thus represents the first step toward asceticism of the ancient world. When comparing the features of seclusion in the Vedic tradition and Christian hermit it was revealed that the Vedic tradition restricts itself to austerity and subjects at all levels of consciousness, not for the service of God, and to compare with him, getting rid of the fear of an infinite chain of rebirths. Devotee of Christianity breaks the bonds with the society in the name of the idea of love and service. As a result, the study concluded that the voluntary departure indicates a very special spiritual fulfilment of the individual, and the receipt of special sacred experience, automatically removes the individual from further participation in public life. The way of hermit in different societies acquires its own characteristics, which demonstrate not only the specifics of the individual allocation of society, but also characterize the society itself
