RECREATIONAL TRAINING VS. SELECTED ATHEROSCLEROSIS RISK FACTORS IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of aerobic physical activity on selected atherosclerosis risk factors in postmenopausal women.Material and methods. Twenty-three women (age 60-74 years) participated in this study. They underwent 8 weeks of aerobic recreational training on a cycle ergometer with 80% of individual threshold intensity (40 minutes, 3 times a week). Two physical tests were applied to estimate the threshold level of selected parameters, before and after completing the training period. Blood pressure measurement and collection of blood from the antecubital vein was performed at rest, before each test. Blood lipids concentration (total cholestelor, triglicerides, HDL-cholestelor) was estimated enzymatically in blood serum. HDL-cholestelor fraction was calculated from Friedewald quotation. Homecysteine concentration was estimated in blood plasma using HPLC method.Results. Mean valueas of triglycerides and HDL-cholestelor concentration, before and after the treatment, ranged within the accepted norms. The mean values of LDL-cholestelor fraction and total cholestelor were slightly elevated before the treatment. The decrease in lipid parameters concentration induced by the training program was significantly different (p<0.05) only for total cholestelor. Homocysteinee concentration and values of systolic blood pressure showed the tendency to decrease after training period.Conclusions. The present study demonstrates that 8 weeks of recreational training in postmenopausal women induce the decrease in atherosclerosis risk factor levels, thus decreasing the risk of other civilization diseases development.
