SURFACE ELECTROPMYOGRAPHY (SEMG) AS AN INNOVATIVE SYSTEM OF RESEARCH WORK ON INFORMATION PROCESSES IN SPORT

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 1

Abstract

This paper offers a review of diagnostic possibilities by using an EMG signal in various branches of science, e. g. in medicine, biology, physical education. It was recognized that from the point of view of the physical culture science surface electromyography (sEMG) seems to be the most useful concept of research on muscle physiology and psychomotor reactions. An innovative approach to this issue was presented by designing an electromyograph, which together with peripheral appliances makes it possible to diagnose information processes at the CSN level through the interpretation of reaction time (RT), movement time (MT) and a sEMG signal expressed in (µV) in any motor activities. The research system was supplemented with the option of stimulation with sound and tactile stimuli, with the possibility of programming the force and frequency of the signals emitted. Proper software enables instant registration of the research results and data transfer to computational programs (Statistica, Excel). The paper also presents a technical concept of the appliance with block diagrams and the measuring system and it offers a general presentation and the principles of detection and registration of a sEMG signal. Finally, it gives suggestions concerning proper location and the direction of placing the pairs of electrodes on the limbs under study. Moreover, potential users are instructed about interference, the possible occurrence of motor artifacts and how to prevent them by proper setting of filters leveling electric noise and possible deformations of an EMG signal.
