ATHLETES’ BODY CONTENTS ANALYSIS BEFORE AND AFTER MARATHON BY BIOELECTRICAL IMPEDANCE
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2014, Vol 30, Issue 2
Abstract
Background. The proper estimation of several parameters such as total body water mass, fat and muscle mass before and after the endurance physical activity may have important influence on training process. The aim of the study was to compare the athletes’body composition before and after the marathon. Material and methods. In the study took part 136 people, including 27 women and 109 men who participated in marathon in the year 2011 and 2012. Body composition was checked by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis method (BIA), using body composition monitor TANITA, BC-418 MA. Statistical analysis was done using the Shapiro-Wilk test and the Wilcoxon’s test with a significance level of p <0.05. Results. Lower weight loss was observed in women than in men after the race (0.81 vs. 1.81 kg). In men significant reduction of body fat percentage (FatP) was measured (14.8 vs. 15.7 %), fat-free body mass (FFM) (61.7 vs. 62.6 kg), total body water (TBW) (45.2 vs. 45.8 kg) and predicted muscle mass (PMM) (58.9 vs. 59.8 kg) after the marathon than before it. Among women, the FatP after the run was significantly lowered than before the run (22.8 vs. 24.7%), whereas the FFM (45.6 vs. 45.1 kg), TBW (33.4 vs. 33.0 kg) and PMM (43.3 vs. 42.9 kg) after the race were higher than before it. Conclusions. Long-lasting physical activity has an influence on anthropological parameters and body composition both in men and women.
