Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2014, Vol 30, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. Studies concerning the level of physical activity in our society are of particular importance for Polish membership in the European Union and for adopting behaviors typical of countries with developed economy and a higher standard of living. The aim of the study was to investigate the declared level of physical activity of students, depending on the fields of study.Material and methods. The study was conducted in the spring of 2013 (as recommended by the authors of IPAQ). The study involved 544 students of Pope John Paul II State School of Higher Education in Biała Podlaska in the following fields of study: Tourism and Recreation, Public Health, Nursing, Emergency Medical Services, and Computer Science. Diagnostic survey method was used in the study. Survey data were collected with the help of a short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), approved by the International Committee of the IPAQ.Results. The students of Emergency Medical Services and Nursing were characterized by the highest total physical activity (2827 MET-min/week and 2696 MET-min/week respectively). The respondents studying at Emergency Medical Services Tourism and Recreation departments were distinguished by taking up the largest amount of intensive physical efforts. The detailed analysis showed a statistically significant variation in intense activity between the students of Emergency Medical Services and the respondents from all other surveyed fields of study.Conclusions. The field of study differentiates statistically significant level of students’ physical activity. Self-assessment of physical fitness is closely related to the level of physical activity reported by the respondents.
