JUDO TRAINING AS A MEANS OF REDUCING SUSCEPTIBILITY TO INJURY DURING FALLS

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the skills of safe falling and susceptibility to injury during falls. 121 people, 48 women and 73 men, aged between 16 and 30 years were studied. The experimental group consisted of 46 judo athletes, while 75 persons who did not practice sport professionally constituted the control group. Kalina test for Suscep­tibility to Body Injury During Falls constituted the re­search tool, together with author’s survey questionnaire on the number and circumstances of falls as well as number and type of injuries. Judo athletes obtained significantly lower results in the Susceptibility to Body Injury During the Fall (p<0.001), which means that they made fewer mistakes when carrying out physical tasks. The average number of falls was higher in the experimental group (judoists) than control (non training). Nevertheless, people who are not involved in any sport activity incurred more body injuries resulting during fall. Among the judoists, body injuries were often concentrated on the lower limbs, only slightly less frequently, upper limbs. A different trend was observed among people who don’t train for any martial arts. Most injuries involved, just as with judoists, the lower limbs, however, the injury to the head and spine were almost as frequent as injury to the upper limbs. More frequent, the people who poorly carried out the physical tasks for the Tests of Susceptibility to Body Injury During Falls reported more body injuries as a result of fall (r=0.60). This trend, to a larger extent was seen in people who don’t train (r=0.57) than in judoists. Judo athletes significantly much less incurred body injuries as a result of falls and the resulting injuries, if any, were often less serious, which may indicate a positive impact of training in reducing chances of body injury.
