Recurrence of parotid pleomorphic adenoma. Case report

Abstract

SUMMARY: Pleomorphic adenoma, also known as mixed tumor, is the most commonly occurring tumor of salivary glands and 60-70% of all of the parotid tumors. The pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland can achieve considerable dimensions and, although benign, often recurs after the initial surgical removal. Dealing with such a recurrence is a challenge for the OMFS as it increases the risk of damaging the facial nerve, of recurrence and malignant transformation of the tumor. The surgical technique that will be used is directly related to the likelihood of recurrence of pleomorphic adenoma, while postoperative radiotherapy appears to play an important role in combating it. The aim of this paper is to present a case of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in a 27 years old female patient, and the way that it was managed.
