Abstract
The article studies reformulation and recontextualization strategies applied in the medical translation. Application of the above-mentioned strategies is proven to derive from the overall tendency of popularizing knowledge promoting communicative empowerment of the recipients whose health literacy is lacking. Popularization markers are analyzed; differences in reformulation and recontextualization’s operating in translation outlined. Association between reformulation, recontextualization and local, global strategies of medical translation is revealed. The article also delves into strategies of popularizing biomedical information in translation. Nature of the medical texts correlates with an embedded potential of accessible and feasible adaptations determined by the target audience needs, skopos and commissioner’s resource base. Strategies and tactics of medical translation are associated with the specifics of TT reception, TT addressees’ characteristics and their implicit expectations about the TL medical text’s influence. As there are many concerns regarding quality of medical translations and medical translator’s competence, these issues have received a considerable critical attention. However, very few publications address the specificities of biomedical knowledge popularization. This paper attempts to show how important it is for a successful translation to identify the biomedical culture’s openness to exogenous influences, typology of biomedical texts, vectors of biomedical information’s transmission, especially in cases when their difference from ST recipients changes the text’s style and register completely. Pragmatics of physician, patient and translator triadic communication influences the process of translation to a great extent, and this influence predominantly shows itself in the ways medical information is processed. Consequently, misunderstandings and miscommunications arising between physician and patient automatically influences not only translation process but also has a longitudinal influence on patient’s health and life quality. Thus, a translator should apply especial perspicacity and dedication, taking into consideration cultural, pragmatic and other aspects of the target audience.
