REGIONAL PROGRAM OF CONSERVATION AND RESTITUTION OF WILD SERVICE TREE – SORBUS TORMINALIS (L.) CRANTZ WITHIN THE REGION PROTECTED BY THE REGIONAL MANAGEMENT OF STATE FORESTS IN PIŁA
Journal Title: Zarządzanie ochroną przyrody w lasach - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 1
Abstract
A wild service tree used to occur in relatively large numbers in wet-ground forests along with other species of trees, such as hornbeam, oak tree and lime tree. Over the last two centuries, plenty of trees were cut down in order to create clear fellings and replace broadleaved forests with pine monocultures. The species has survived only thanks to its considerable vital strength manifesting itself through a possibility to reproduce through suckers [Tarnawski 2001, Bednorz 2010]. The quantitative status and the overall state of the tree are underlined by the fact that it has been put on the list of species under strict protection. It seems however that the above mentioned kind of protection may not be sufficient to preserve and rebuild the quantitative status of the species. That is why actions aiming at creating appropriate conditions for its growth and reproduction seem to be precious initiatives complementing the preservative protection. The lands of forest district offices supervised by the Regional Management of State Forests in Piła fall entirely within the agreed range of the wild service tree. The results of the inventory underlined the need to take appropriate actions relating to the active protection in order to conserve and rebuild the quantitative state of the species. The head of the Ecosystem Management Office of the Regional Management of State Forests in Piła, Jacek Zwierzyński, initiated the program of conservation and restitution of wild service tree implemented in 2010-2013.The results of the inventory of wild service tree positions conducted in 2008 within the area under surveillance of forest district offices within the Regional Management of State Forests in Piła showed limited occurrence of the species in the Piła forests. 3,977 pieces were inventoried out of which 100% are located within the area managed by the units of State Forests. In 2009, 96.90 kg of fruit (3.1 kg of seeds) from 33 trees within the forest district office Kaczory and 100.00 kg of fruit (2.5 kg of seeds) from 69 trees in the forest district office Krucz were obtained after having received appropriate permits. The material was sufficient to fulfil the needs relating to the realization of the program. In August 2010, along with Leszek Bednorz, Ph.D. (Poznań University of Life Sciences), the positions were reviewed in order to verify the planned protective measures. On the basis of the inspection, the detailed lists of tasks within the scope of in situ protection were made. As far as ex situ protection is concerned, the program preferred the preventive spot crops in the form of groups and minor clumps located in places similar to optimal conditions of the species that are to serve as centres of its natural reproduction in the future. All the measures taken within the in situ protection in the inventoried populations were implemented in accordance with the program, whereas the ex situ protection introduced 37,780 saplings of the species.
