REGULATION OF IRON METABOLISM AND EXERCISE

Journal Title: Medicina Sportiva - Year 2011, Vol 15, Issue 4

Abstract

Iron is an essential element for all living cells. More in detail, iron is a key component for oxygen transport and storage, and is part of mitochondrial enzymes and cytochromes involved in the electron transport system. However, as the two sides of the same coin, iron is also involved in the production of reactive oxygen species and consequently requires a very fine regulation. In the context of exercise, and particularly in endurance disciplines, iron metabolism and its control is always a concern for physicians since exercise leads to iron losses and regularly produces hemolysis. In this article the complex molecular mechanisms governing iron homeostasis by the hepcidin-ferroportin axis are briefly reviewed. Afterwards the review is focused on the effect of endurance exercise on iron metabolism and its possible implications for physician and coaches. Overall, this review aims to stimulate the discussion and the research on iron metabolism and its important role in the athlete´s heath.
