REHABILITATION OR PHYSIOTHERAPY?

Abstract

Introduction Rehabilitation andphysiotherapy are terms that are commonly used but not clearly differentiated. It also happens that both are used synonymously. It is worth taking a closer look at each of them. For some people, rehabilitation is a process that is aimed at improving the quality of life of a disabled person. For others, it is connected with muscular-skeletal related impairments, also defined as locomotor organ. It is commonly assumed that rehabilitation is a whole therapeutic process whereas physiotherapy is only a part of it. Nevertheless, physiotherapy is a treatment with physical factors, defines the scope of health services and requires the provider to take diagnostic as well as therapeutic decisions. Aim The aim of the paper is to draw attention to the problem of defining certain terms around rehabilitation as they contribute to the ambivalent way of defining the professions of a physiotherapist and a physician specialist of medical rehabilitation. Materials and methods The subject of the dissertation is best related to the three publications and own experience, i.e. 1) Rehabilitation Examined – the article published in January 2016 in Journal of Physiotherapy 2) Rethinking Rehabilitation: Theory and Practice handbook published in 2015, 3) Musing on Diagnosis – the article published in Physical Therapy in 1988, 4) Own observations and thoughts from the IX International Congress of Polish Rehabilitation Society in Katowice (13–15.10.2016). Results The review of the fore-mentioned articles and the thoughts indicate that insufficient definitions of rehabilitation and physiotherapy are reflected in the interest conflict between medical doctors and physiotherapists. Conclusions 1. The content of three mentioned articles in English should be familiar to the students of physiotherapy and physicians specializing in Medical Rehabilitation. 2. Before the amendment of the Physiotherapists Act in Poland, it is necessary to organize a debate on the border problems of rehabilitation and physiotherapy.
