Relationship between agronomic and morphological traits in barley varieties under drought stress condition
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 9
Abstract
In order to evaluate some morphological characteristics of different varieties of barley, ten varieties of barley in a randomized complete block design with three replications were planted in the 2014-2015 crop year under drought stress condition. Grain yield per square meter, harvest index, plant height, spike length, awn length, 1000 grain weight, stem diameter, seed length, seed diameter, peduncle length, days to heading and days to maturity were measured. The results showed that varieties for grain yield, harvest index, plant height, spike length, spike weight, awn length, stem diameter, length of seed, seed diameter and peduncle length are different significantly. Harvest index and 1000 grain weight were significantly positive correlated with grain yield, thus these traits can be used to improve grain yield. Multiple linear regression showed that days to heading and harvest index explain the greatest variance of grain yield. Path analysis showed that the harvest index has the positive direct effect and days to heading has negative direct effect on grain yield. The results showed that characteristics such as harvest index, plant height, peduncle length, awn length and 1000 grain weight can be used as indicators for high-performance cultivars in stress condition.
