Relationship between Communicative Reaction Strategies of American Teenagers and Sociolinguistic Factors

Abstract

The article analyzes the reactive speech of American teenagers. The peculiarities of speakers’ communicative behaviour, depending on the social and status characteristics of the communicants and the situation of communication are being investigated. It describes the two basic ways of speakers’ attitude – cooperation or confrontation. These approaches define further implementation of speech strategies through the usage of a variety of communicative acts and language means. The term "Strategy" is borrowed from the military sphere. The communicative strategy constitutes the presupposition of all future conversation, the usage pf language means and certain tactics in achieving communicative goals. Recipient, not being familiar with the purpose of talking, spontaneously selects a strategy taking into account several verbal and extra-linguistic factors. The effect of these factors is valuable as an object of linguistic research. We should rather talk not about cooperation as the requirement of effective communication, but the communicative victory as a leading catalyst of speech. The concept of communicative success depends on close interweaving of cooperative and confrontational speech strategies or tactics. Considering the duality of human nature, aimed at both cooperation and competition it is easy to allocate the opposition of ''peaceful'' and ''aggressive'' strategies. While communicating speaker may also enhance the conflict, or try to appease interlocutor by defusing tensions that arose between communicants.
