Relationship between Hopelessness and Depression among Persons with Disabilities and their Parents

Abstract

Background:Persons with disabilities can be made an integral part of the society, as well as help generate higher economic growth that will benefit the country. It is also noted that having a child with disability affects not only the parents, but also the siblings and the relationship among family members. Objective: The present study was carried out to investigate the relationship between hopelessness and depression among persons with disabilities and their parents. Sample: The sample included 42 orthopedics handicapped (OH), 42 parents of persons with OH and 42 hearing impaired persons (HI) and 42 parents of persons with HI. Design: Cross-sectional design and purposive sampling method was used for this study. Tool: Beck Hopelessness Scale and Beck Depression Inventory were administered to 84 persons with disabilities (OH, HI) and their 84 parents. Results: Significant positive relationship was noticed between depression and hopelessness among HI and their parents but not among OH & their parents. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggests for the development of a psycho-social program for the person with disability.
