Comparison of Problem Solving Abilities among Patients of Schizophrenia with Positive and Negative Symptoms

Abstract

Background: Problem solving is a higher-order cognitive process that requires the modulation and control of more routine or fundamental skills. Problem solving occurs when an organism needs to move from a given state to a desired goal state. Patients with schizophrenia often have poor ability to solve problem arising from day to day living and stressful live events. Objectives: The present study was designed to assess the problem solving skills among patients of schizophrenia having predominant positive and negative symptoms. Sample: Patients with schizophrenia in the age range from 21 to 40 years were selected for the study. They were screened for positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia through PANSS. Design: Based on purposive sampling technique, sixty patients diagnosed as schizophrenia according to ICD-10 criteria were selected from inpatient wards of the RINPAS. Tool: Problem Solving Inventory (PSI) developed by Heppner was administered. Results: Result shows poor problem solving abilities and attitude in 87% and 84% of schizophrenia patients with predominant positive and negative symptoms respectively. Conclusion: The difference between both groups was statistically nonsignificant. Patients of both groups had poor approach-avoidance style and poor personal control.
