Relationship between parenting styles and self-efficacy in preadolescents in Salcedo-Ecuador
Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2024, Vol 18, Issue 3
Abstract
Parenting styles are fundamental in the education parents provide to their children, as they promote their understanding of the world and the development of skills, such as self-efficacy, which enable them to perform well in academic, social, and athletic domains. In this context, the relationship between parenting styles and self-efficacy in pre-adolescents was established at an Educational Unit in Salcedo, Cotopaxi province, Ecuador, in September 2023, involving 220 students in a quantitative study with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design of descriptive and correlational scope. The Perception of Parenting Styles Questionnaire Abbreviated Version (CRPBI-A) and the Multidimensional Scale of Children's Self-Efficacy (EMA) were applied. In parenting styles, a higher mean was found in the communicative factor for fathers (M=16.15) and mothers (M=17.34). Regarding overall self-efficacy, the sample presented a moderate range (M=41.99). Concerning correlation levels, a positive statistical significance (p < 0.05) of mild intensity was shown in the communicative factor for both parents. Additionally, the overprotective factor was prevalent in mothers. A negative correlation was also evidenced in the hostile factor, with a higher value for fathers. The conclusions highlighted the importance of appropriate parenting styles for the optimal development of self-efficacy.
