Stress and coping in Ecuadorian nursing professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic

Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2023, Vol 17, Issue 3

Abstract

The conditions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic generated stress in the nursing staff who assisted those infected, the level of which was conditioned by the ability to cope. The objective of the study was to correlate the level of stress and managing capacity in nursing professionals who worked in the areas of care for critical patients in the public general hospitals of the Ecuadorian provinces Imbabura, Carchi, Sucumbíos, and Esmeraldas in 2021. The research had a quantitative approach, with a non-experimental design and correlational scope, in which the 240 from that context participated. The data were collected using two instruments: the Work Stressors Scale in Nursing Personnel and the Coping and Adaptation Process Measurement Scale. 68.3% of those surveyed were under 36 years of age, 80.8% were female, and 88% had a bachelor's degree. The majority had a high level of coping ability (76.7%), while, in the case of stress, it was the medium level (68.8%). A statistically significant positive correlation with mode-rate intensity was established between both study variables.
