Validation of the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) in university students

Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2023, Vol 17, Issue 3

Abstract

A smartphone is a helpful tool for communication, information seeking, and socialization; However, its excessive use could generate addictive behaviors, generating psychological, academic, and work problems. An investigation was carried out to validate the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS) in univer-sity students of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Universidad Peruana Unión during the 2022 cycle - II. The study design was non-experimental, cross-sectional, and instrumental. Six hundred fifty-eight students participated (50.8% men). The instrument presented adequate content validity, unidimensional internal structure (CFI = 0.99; RMSEA = 0.05 [90% CI: 0.04-0.07]; SRMR = 0.04), and adequate relia-bility established through the coefficients: omega = 0.89 [95% CI: 0.86-0.91] and H = 0.91. The instru-ment had adequate reliability and was recommended for evaluating the risk of mobile addiction through the inference and interpretation of its scores in university students of health sciences, being useful as a diagnosis during the design of preventive measures concerning this problem and as a source of data about the effects on academic performance and engagement.
