RELIGIOUS RELATIONS IN THE POLISH-UKRAINIAN BORDERLAND. THE EXAMPLE OF TOMASZÓW POVIAT

Abstract

The author discusses the religious relations at the Polish-Ukrainian borderland with particular attention to Tomaszów Lubelski Poviat. By religious relations the author understands the correlations between denominational entities, between denominational entities and other entities as well as the relations involving denominational entities but governed by denominational law. The author’s approach to the issue is multi-faceted and goes beyond plain characteristics of initiatives undertaken by the authorities of Tomaszów Lubelski Poviat. The study does not omit to touch upon the historical context of Polish-Ukrainian cooperation. The author also outlines the underlying ideas of the agreements concluded between Tomaszów Lubelski Poviat and its gimnas and discusses the relevant solutions adopted at the national and regional level. The concluding part of the paper focuses on the practical forms of collaboration such as the Cross-border Polish-Ukrainian Good Neighbourhood Days held annually in Korczmin, Tomaszów Lubelski Poviat. During this event, the inhabitants of either side of the border converge to maintain mutual relationships. In order to help this, a provisional border crossing is established to enable thousands of visitors to attend. The symbol of the village of Korczmin, which was halved by reason of historical turbulence, is now seen as a symbol of reconciliation.
