RESILIENCE AND ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION IN ADOLESCENTS OF CHILPANCINGO GUERRERO, MEXICO

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between resilience and alcohol consumption among adolescents in Chilpancingo Guerrero, Mexico. To this quantitative descriptive correlational study it was conducted on a sample of 657 adolescents, students from high school. A charter of personal data and consumption of alcohol is applied, and the Resilience Scale Wagnild designed by Young and validated in the Mexican population, the overall Cronbach Alpha in this study was 0.92. The results show that 67.9% of students have consumed alcohol at some time in life, 43.5% last year and 14.5% in the last seven days prior to the implementation of the survey. With regard to the objective stated in this study, a significant negative relationship between the sub-scale of personal competence (rs = -0.120, p = 0.017) and the sub-scale acceptance of self and life was identified (rs = -0.145, p = 0.046) with the amount of alcohol consumed on a typical day. This indicates that the greater resilience is lower alcohol consumption among adolescents.
