RESULTS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCHES IN THE COURTYARD OF LVIV CITY HALL

Abstract

History of Lviv City Hall begins in the second half of XIV century (1381). From that time until today, construction of several new buildings and significant amount of their reconstructions took place. The last stage of development of Lviv City Hall began in 1827 after establishing of the foundations of the new building. Administrative construction took its modern appearance after the events of 1848, during which the dome of the tower was damaged, in consequence of which the tower of City Hall received its modern look. In July 2011 expedition of SRC “Rescue Archaeological Service” of IA of NAS of Ukraine carried out rescuing research in the courtyard of the City Hall. Excavation pit was situated in the southern part of the courtyard 3×4 meters, and adjacent to the front of the window. From the depth of 0,80 m to 2,00–2,15 m cultural layers related to the construction of modern City Hall and dismantling of the previous building are deposited. In the cultural layers that are situated on the depth of 3,00–3,40 m a large number of mobile archaeological material from the end of XIV–XVIII centuries, represented by the fragments and whole forms of ceramic ware, objects made of glass and metal was found. During the research of remains of stone structures of City Hall in 1491 (walls number 1, 2 and 4) were partially discovered and documented. They provide information about the specifics of their construction, planning structure of basements and situation of preservation of the walls. Characteristics and stages of construction of the foundations of the modern City Hall (wall 3) and the level of deposition of its foot were recorded. On the level of the bed deposits at the depth of 3,10 m one in-depth object, ruined from the north and west by walls 1 and 2 were discovered. Its preserved part has size of 1,48×0,36 m and depth of 0,45–0,60 m from the level of its detection, with orientation by the line north-south. Filling of the object consisted of gray sandy soil containing a large amount of ceramic ware from the end of XIV-XV centuries. Research object served as a pit of economic purpose. Taking into account the small size of discovered area, carried out studies shown perspectives for future archaeological researches.
