Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Since the first reported cases in 1981, HIV remains one of the most serious health and developmental challenges worldwide. HIV is one of the most frequently recorded transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs) .HIV screening among blood donors is therefore a key safety issue in addition to screening for other TTIs such as HBV, HCV and syphilis. Commercial sex workers are responsible for the majority of HIV transmission in India. National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) estimates 86% transmission is due to sexual risk, 2.4% due to intravenous drug users, 2.0% due to blood and blood products, and 3.6% due to perinatal transmission. Aim: This study was carried out to ascertain the trend of HIV infections among blood donors over the years. Material and Methods: This study was done in Government General Hospital, Blood bank, Mahabubnagar district, Telangana state, India. Study duration was five years, from July 2013 to June 2018. Data were collected from the records of blood bank which also included data of blood donation camps. Data regarding sex, screening test results and type of donors were collected from the records. Results: Out of 9432 donors in the study period of five years, from June 2013 to May 2018. Most of the donors in this study are voluntary donors constituting around 92.8 % of the total donors. overall prevalence of HIV-1 was 0.72% in our study. HIV-2 infection was not observed.
