RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF BIONIC LUBRICANT COMPOSITIONS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2017, Vol 276, Issue 6

Abstract

The aim of the study was to investigate the rheological properties of aqueous solutions of sodium hyaluronate (molecular weight 1.0-1.8 MDa) in 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0% w/w compositions. The tests were performed using a rotary rheometer MCR 101 (Anton Paar), in a plate-cone measuring system, at 20 °C. Flow curves, viscosity curves, hysteresis loops, as well as the dependence of the conservative modulus G’ and the loss modulus G’’, depending on the oscillation frequency, were recorded. The compositions tested showed non-Newtonian liquid properties thinning by shear, and the viscoelastic properties were determined by the concentration of hyaluronan in water. For compositions with a concentration of 0.1% w/w and 0.5% w/w, the viscosity and elasticity of the compositions varied periodically by the oscillation frequency. On the other hand, the 1% w/w composition exhibits the dominance of elastic over the viscous properties in over the tested oscillation range. It is envisaged that such compositions may be considered as potential bionic lubricants for medical applications.
