RISK FACTORS AND MOTION ORGANS INJURIES IN VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS OF LOWER LEAGUES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2015, Vol 31, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. Professional volleyball players are exposed to injuries caused by rivalry, training overload and insufficient warming up of the body. The aim of this study was to analyze the injury incidence among volleyball players and to evaluate the risk factors and applied treatment.Material and methods. The analysis included players from six volleyball clubs practicing volleyball in the 2nd and 3rd league. The group consisted of 81 people aged be tween 13 and 36 (mean 21.35±4.29).Results. The results of the research showed that 64 volleyball players experienced injuries that mainly affected their lower limbs. These included ankle injuries in 34 persons (53.13%) and knee injuries in 10 persons (15.63%). The locations of upper limb injuries were as follows: shoulder injuries – 6 players (9.38%), hand and wrist injuries – 5 players (6.25%). The most common situation resulting in an injury was contact with another player (26.56%), followed by blocking (25%). The reasons mentioned by the competitors were: rivalry – 48.44%, training overload – 18.75%, insufficient warming up of the body – 15.63%. The most common treatment methods applied were: laser therapy, cryotherapy and electrotherapy.Conclusions. 1. The occurrence of the injury did not correlate with age, height, the position on the playing field nor the frequency of training. Only higher body weight caused the pre-disposition of the volleyball players in getting injuries. 2. The risk factors were the situations during matches and trainings relating to insufficient warming up and overloading.
