River floating fees in the Kingdom of Poland of Paskievich era

Abstract

River basin floating fees were considered among more significant sources of financial income generated by the transport activities in the Kingdom of Poland during socalled Paskevych period. That included both the toll collection paid for Vistula river crossing in Warsaw and, for example, in localities like: Zawichost, Plock or Wloclawek. Apparently, there were also practiced some sorts of levies of float tariffs, in force on other rivers of the Kingdom, for instance on the Narew river in Ostroleka. Analysis of the available source material allows us to point out the actual failure of introducing a uniform Polish system of navigable levies, as they were significantly differing in principle from location to location and with the passage of time. Thus, such conclusion would not give us the possibility of issuing a positive recommendation for the very assessment of efficiency of entire system of river floating levy collection in Kingdom of Poland during the whole of inter-uprising period.
