Abstract

The article concerns the problem of reading aloud to children of preschool age. According to the authors, reading together with parents is an important part of raising a young man. In order to determine the role it plays in shaping the attitudes of reading in children, a questionnaire was conducted. It was attended by parents representing 32 children from the Municipal Kindergarten No. 3 in Katowice. The research produced a series of information necessary to establish the role that reading aloud plays in shaping the attitudes of reading in children 3-6 years old. This information includes, among others, regularity of reading together, time spent by the parents on reading to children, the types of activity undertaken by children during the reading aloud, the structure of domestic collections of children’s literature, as well as tastes and reading preferences in different age groups of preschoolers. Parents showed great knowledge about the benefi ts of reading aloud to children. An attempt was made to identify the source of discrepancies between the list of favorite children’s books and the “Golden List” of recommended reading by experts in children’s literature.
